| Laurie & Doug Kanyer |
Laurie AD Kanyer is a Yakima native whose Irish Immigrant family was among the first to settle the Yakima Valley in the late 1860’s. Kanyer is the author of three books, The Journey of Becoming Mother: Tools for a New Mother’s Emotional Growth and Development, The Parent Connection: Building Attachments Between Parents and Child and her latest book, Twenty-five Things to Do When Grandpa Passes Away, Mom and Dad Get Divorced, or the Dog Dies. She has also developed Braided Memories: Recalling Life Events on String and Remembered Prayers, Promises and Miracles on String, based on a traditional Yakama Native American tool to assist people in identifying connections in life.
Laurie has been an innovator, working in the field of parent and family life education since 1981. Laurie holds a bachelor's degree from Central Washington University and a master’s degree in Human Development from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota, specializing in birth, death and life transitions. She has been a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) since 1990 and served on the National Council on Family Relations CFLE National Certifying Committee.
Kanyer is currently in private educational practice through her program, Growing Capable Parents, offering education, counseling and consultation services to pregnant and parenting mothers who are receiving TANF (Temporary Aid to Needy Families) welfare grants, many of whom suffered significant losses as children. She is a business organizational consultant and a leadership mentor focusing primarily with not-for-profit organizations.
Happily married since 1981 to husband Doug Kanyer, Laurie is the mother of three grown children, Elisabeth, Kirsten, Wyatt and she is mother in law to Kirsten’s husband Andy.
